Wooly Mammoth
Wooly mammoths lived during the Pleistocene period, 1.8 million – 10,000 years ago. They became extinct between 10,000 – 8,000 years ago, with a few dwarf varieties surviving until 1,700 BC. Their extinction was probably brought about by climate change and early man’s hunting.
Mammoth skeletons and four complete preserved bodies have been found in the permafrost of Siberia, Alaska, Canada and the Northern US. Partial skeletons, tusks and teeth have been found even further South in the US.
